As dog training classes are used to train dogs in many areas from basic commands to advanced training courses, it is unfortunate that one aspect of training not covered would be chewing. Although chewing is usually considered a problem to be dealt with in puppies only, it has been observed that older dogs may need this type of training as well since they enjoy chewing away just as much as any puppy may. Training a dog not to chew then, can be accomplished with simple things such as acceptable chew toys and positive praising and training in order to deter a dog from chewing.
To begin with, it must be understood that all dogs tend to chew because they need to chew. Accordingly, there should be a number of things that are acceptable for the dog to chew on. By keeping all the chewing toys for the dog in one place, as in a special toy box, the dog will recognize this area as its spot for chewing on the toys and the dog training program has begun. Therefore, it is absolutely essential for the dog training process to work by being consistent in keeping all the acceptable chewing toys in one spot, and by helping the dog to understand that is the spot to chew on only those toys. By allowing the dog to chew on the approved toys, the dog will be kept content and should not feel the need to venture out and chew on other things that do not belong to the dog.
During the training of the dog, the dog may be found chewing on something that is not meant to be chewed on and the urge to thrash or beat the dog may arise. Should this situation present itself, remember to use positive praise and positive training to help reinforce the training process to be a success. It has been observed that if a better response is desired from the dog, then positive praise and positive dog training can be really helpful. Also, by putting a taste deterrent on those items that are not to be chewed on creating what is called a "bitter apple," this will aid in the positive training method as well. So if the dog is found to be chewing on something it is not suppose to be chewing on, then reprimand it verbally using only the tone of voice as punishment.
By using the positive praise and training method and by creating an atmosphere where the dog is allowed to chew on certain acceptable toys, the dog training methods will be most effective and are sure to deter the dog from chewing other things. As long as the basic aspects of dog training are followed, then the training itself should be quite simple and easy to accomplish without any negative methods being used or the owner's favorite things being chewed on. Dog training can also be quite fun and satisfying as long as patience can be used to help ensure the training to be a complete success.
